This pixellated Bonsai Tree was a collaboration piece between Think2Thing and TongTong. I worked on the algorithm to generate the cubic pattern within a branch shape. The piece was printed in 11 pieces in Nylon 12 material and stitched together in post. The final assembly between the branch and the trunk was made at Nota Bene Restaurant. This was one of the most complex 3D printed piece I’ve ever had the opportunity to model and process.
Project contributions:
Develop randomized 3D volumetric pixellation algorithm (in Rhino3D Grasshoper) to turn a volume shape into pixellated square panels and empty cubes
Model entire model of the Bonsai branches
3D print and process Bonsai branches in 11 separate pieces
